Ending the Epidemic with Care and Dignity_
MEWATA's HIV & AIDS Program
HIV remains a critical public health issue in Tanzania, disproportionately affecting women and girls. The Medical Women Association of Tanzania (MEWATA) confronts this challenge head-on by leveraging our unique position as trusted female healthcare providers. We go beyond testing and treatment to deliver comprehensive, stigma-free care that addresses the medical, psychological, and social dimensions of living with HIV. Our goal is not just viral suppression, but a life of health, dignity, and hope for all affected individuals and families.
Our Holistic Model of Care
Our program is built on the understanding that effective HIV care requires an integrated, person-centered approach. Here is how we deliver it:
1. Prevention, Testing, and Linkage to Care
We are committed to stopping new transmissions and ensuring everyone knows their status.
-
Targeted Prevention Education: We provide accurate information on HIV transmission and prevention, with a focus on women, adolescents, and key populations.
-
Accessible Testing: We offer confidential counseling and testing (HTC) in our clinics and through community outreach, creating safe spaces for individuals to learn their status.
-
Seamless Linkage: For those who test positive, our staff provide immediate emotional support and actively link them to care and treatment (ART) services, ensuring they start treatment as soon as possible.
2. Clinical Care, Treatment Adherence, and PMTCT
We support individuals throughout their treatment journey to achieve and maintain viral suppression.
-
Quality Clinical Management: Our medical members provide and advocate for high-standard Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) care.
-
Adherence Support: We run support groups and individual counseling sessions to empower clients with strategies to maintain over 95% adherence to their medication, which is key to health and preventing transmission.
-
Eliminating Mother-to-Child Transmission (eMTCT): This is a core pillar. We integrate Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) services seamlessly into all antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care, ensuring HIV-positive mothers can give birth to HIV-negative babies.
3. Addressing Co-morbidities and Stigma
We treat the whole person, not just the virus.
-
Integrated Screening: We screen for and manage co-infections like Tuberculosis (TB) and co-morbidities such as cervical cancer and non-communicable diseases, which are critical for the long-term health of people living with HIV.
-
Psychosocial and Economic Empowerment: We combat the devastating impact of stigma through counseling and peer support networks. Our programs also include economic strengthening initiatives to improve the livelihoods of affected families, reducing vulnerability.
4. Focus on Key and Vulnerable Populations
We tailor our approach to meet specific community needs.
-
Services for Adolescents & Young People: We offer adolescent-friendly HIV services that are confidential and non-judgmental.
-
Support for Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women: We ensure this group receives specialized care and support to protect their health and their children’s.
-
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Linkage: We provide crucial Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and support for survivors of sexual violence to prevent HIV infection.
