Building Tomorrow's Health Leaders_
MEWATA's Capacity Building Program
Sustainable change in healthcare requires more than services—it demands strong systems and skilled professionals. The Medical Women Association of Tanzania (MEWATA) recognizes that investing in people is the most powerful way to create lasting impact. Through our Capacity Building Program, we equip healthcare workers, community advocates, and future leaders with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to deliver high-quality, gender-sensitive care and drive health innovation across Tanzania.
Our Strategic Approach to Strengthening Health Capacity
We build capacity at multiple levels—from clinical skills to leadership development—using proven, hands-on methodologies.
1. Clinical Skills and Specialty Training for Healthcare Providers
We elevate the quality of care by enhancing the competencies of medical professionals.
Advanced Clinical Workshops: We conduct specialized training in breast and cervical cancer screening (CBE & VIA), comprehensive family planning, clinical management of rape (CMR), and HIV/AIDS care and treatment.
Mentorship and Preceptorship: Experienced MEWATA specialists provide one-on-one clinical mentorship to younger doctors and nurses in public health facilities, fostering hands-on learning and confidence.
Training of Trainers (ToT): We develop cadres of master trainers within regions to ensure knowledge multiplication and sustainable skill transfer within local health systems.
2. Leadership and Management Development for Women in Health
We break barriers for women to lead at all levels of the health sector.
Women’s Leadership Institutes: We run structured programs focusing on health systems management, policy advocacy, financial management, and strategic communication for female healthcare professionals.
Network and Platform Building: We create spaces for mentorship and peer support among our members, connecting young medical women with seasoned experts for guidance and career advancement.
3. Community Health Worker (CHW) and Peer Educator Empowerment
We strengthen the frontline of community health.
Certified Training Programs: We train CHWs and peer educators in health education, basic screening referrals, data collection, and community mobilization techniques for programs in reproductive health, cancer awareness, and HIV.
Continuous Skill Updates: We provide refresher courses and supportive supervision to ensure community-based volunteers maintain high standards and motivation.
4. Institutional Strengthening for Health Facilities
We help health systems work better for women and communities.
Gender Sensitivity Training: We train entire facility staff—from clinicians to receptionists—on providing respectful, stigma-free, and gender-sensitive care, particularly for survivors of violence and adolescents.
Quality Improvement Collaboratives: We facilitate workshops for health facility teams to identify gaps in service delivery (e.g., in family planning or HIV testing) and develop action plans for improving service quality and patient experience.
