Early Detection, Lifelong Support_
Empowering Medical Women, Transforming Health
In Tanzania, breast cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage, when treatment is more difficult and outcomes are poorer. At the Medical Women Association of Tanzania (MEWATA), we are changing this narrative. Our community-driven program is dedicated to breaking down barriers of fear, misinformation, and access. We empower women with knowledge, provide critical early screening, and walk beside patients every step of their journey, from diagnosis to survivorship.
How We Are Making a Difference
Our program is built on a clear, four-pillar strategy to combat breast cancer:
1. Community Education & Awareness
We believe knowledge is the first line of defense. Our medical women and trained volunteers conduct outreach across communities to:
-
Teach “Breast Awareness”—helping women understand their normal breast health and recognize early warning signs.
-
Dispel myths and reduce stigma through open dialogues in villages, schools, and places of worship.
-
Utilize powerful testimonials from Breast Cancer Survivors to inspire hope and encourage timely action.
2. Accessible Screening for Early Detection
We bring life-saving screening services directly to where women live.
-
Our primary tool is Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) performed by our skilled doctors and nurses.
-
We conduct regular free screening camps in underserved and remote areas.
-
Screening is also integrated into services at our partner clinics nationwide.
3. Patient Navigation & Referral
A suspicious finding is just the beginning. We ensure no woman walks alone.
-
We provide a clear referral pathway to trusted facilities for advanced diagnostics (ultrasound, biopsy) and treatment.
-
Our staff help patients navigate complex hospital systems, ensuring they receive the continuity of care they deserve.
4. Comprehensive Patient Support
We address the full impact of a cancer diagnosis—financial, emotional, and physical.
-
Financial Aid: Our Patient Support Fund assists with costs for transport, tests, and treatment.
-
Psychosocial Care: We facilitate support groups, offering a safe space for sharing and healing.
-
Palliative Care: For those with advanced cancer, we focus on pain management and dignity, linking families with essential care services.
